Game Set Goals Tennis Series Completes a Successful First Month of Impact
Expanding Opportunities for Youth Through Tennis and Storytelling
The first month of the Game Set Goals Tennis Series has officially come to a close, marking an exciting milestone for Equity For All, Community Tennis Roeding Park, and the Roeding Park Tennis Club. Throughout the month of June, this free youth development program welcomed students in grades 4–6 to experience a unique combination of tennis instruction, storytelling, leadership development, and goal setting.
More than just a tennis clinic, the Game Set Goals Tennis Series was created with a simple but meaningful vision: to use tennis and storytelling as tools to expand educational, career, and personal opportunities for youth throughout our community.
A Month of Growth
Over four free community clinics, the program served 34 youth with 46 total student participations, supported by 10 dedicated volunteers and coaches who generously shared their time, knowledge, and encouragement with every participant.
One of the most exciting outcomes from the pilot program was that 44.8% of participating students had never played tennis before. For many families, this clinic represented their child's very first experience with the sport.
Through beginner-friendly instruction, students learned the fundamentals of tennis, including forehands, backhands, serving, movement, teamwork, and sportsmanship. Every session emphasized creating a welcoming environment where students could challenge themselves, celebrate progress, and enjoy being active together.
Breaking Down Barriers
As part of the pilot program, Equity For All also collected feedback from participating families to better understand what prevents children from participating in tennis.
Parents consistently identified three major barriers:
Cost of participation
Not knowing how to get started
Not having someone for their child to play with
These findings reaffirm why the Game Set Goals Tennis Series was created.
By providing free instruction, equipment, coaching, and mentorship, the program removes many of the obstacles that prevent young people from experiencing the lifelong benefits of tennis.
Every child deserves the opportunity to discover a new passion, regardless of their family's financial circumstances or previous experience with the sport.
More Than Tennis
While students learned how to rally, serve, and compete on the court, each clinic also included Your Story Matters, Equity For All's storytelling workshop designed to help students discover who they are and who they hope to become.
Throughout the month, students participated in activities that encouraged them to reflect on their dreams, identify role models, explore their personal identity, and think about the future they want to create.
Rather than simply asking students what they wanted to be when they grow up, the workshops encouraged them to think about the journey toward those dreams. Students discussed the qualities they admire in others and how lessons learned through tennis, such as discipline, resilience, teamwork, and communication, can help them succeed both on and off the court.
During the final session, students took the next step by exploring how tennis can create opportunities for their future. Through guided discussions, they discovered that tennis is more than just a sport. It can open doors to education, scholarships, new friendships, leadership opportunities, and future careers.
These conversations helped students recognize that every person has a unique story and that their dreams, experiences, and voices matter.
Expanding Opportunities Through Tennis and Storytelling
The Game Set Goals Tennis Series is built on the belief that tennis can do much more than teach athletic skills.
Tennis develops discipline, perseverance, communication, sportsmanship, and healthy lifestyle habits. When combined with storytelling, it becomes a powerful platform for helping youth build confidence, strengthen leadership skills, and explore educational and career opportunities they may have never considered before.
This approach aligns with Equity For All's mission of expanding career and educational opportunities for youth through storytelling, while also supporting Community Tennis Roeding Park's commitment to making tennis accessible to everyone in the Fresno community.
Together, these organizations are creating opportunities that extend far beyond the tennis court.
A Community Effort
The success of the first month would not have been possible without the incredible support of volunteers, families, and community partners.
A special thank you goes to Valley Pride Racket & Paddle for generously providing tennis equipment throughout the pilot program, helping ensure that every child had the resources needed to participate.
We are also grateful to Community Tennis Roeding Park and the Roeding Park Tennis Club for their partnership and shared commitment to growing the game of tennis while creating meaningful opportunities for local youth.
Most importantly, thank you to every family who trusted us with their children and every student who showed up ready to learn, grow, and encourage one another each week.
Looking Ahead
Although June marked the completion of our first pilot month, this is only the beginning.
The Game Set Goals Tennis Series will continue throughout the summer as we expand opportunities for even more youth to experience tennis, develop life skills, and discover the power of their own stories.
As the program continues to grow, Equity For All remains committed to building partnerships with schools, community organizations, and youth-serving agencies that share the vision of creating equitable opportunities for every child. Through tennis and storytelling, we believe every young person can discover new strengths, pursue meaningful goals, and begin writing a story filled with possibility.
